Debate may rage as to the most jaw-dropping horizon in the Alps. The north face of the Eiger seen from Grindelwald is spellbinding. The sheer gradient and scale of the Eiger are hard to comprehend, while its history of conquest and tragedy makes it a place to reflect on the allure of the mountains.
Standing in front of the Matterhorn for the first time is like the ultimate moment of déjà vu, given that the peak is one of the world's most widely reproduced geological silhouettes. The weather that wraps around the peak and the changing light almost makes the Matterhorn seem alive.
But for me, the Chamonix Valley is the ultimate eye candy in the mountains. The Aiguille du Midi, the glacial cascades, and the looming Mont Blanc are truly spectacular, and it is hard to argue for a more stupendous vista. When taken in totality, the Chamonix valley offers the emerald Glacier d'Argentière, the Mer de Glace, and the mind-blowing Aiguille Les Drus.
Pick a location in the Chamonix valley, look southeast and take in some of the most remarkable natural features imaginable.
