Even without putting skis or snowboards on snow at this time of the year there is an inner comfort in knowing that lifts are still rolling and a drive or flight away offers the chance to indulge in sports that are unmatched. And whilst the slopes of the Hintertux Glacier and those above Zermatt offer skiing throughout the summer then many of us will have our planks or boards in storage for the summer months. Many miss out on the chance of early summer powder and this season has been no different with powder skiing already in May 2012 - the glacier skiing areas aren't massively marketed, whilst most people are looking forward to the beach rather than the ski piste. Equally there are many who overlook the autumn ski season which regularly kicks off in September and from October onwards often offering snow conditions as good as anything in the conventional peak season. Don't imagine that the glaciers will be desolate places - they can be mobbed in November, especially on weekends. Equally the resorts might not have the masses of Christmas and New Year periods have but there can be lively apres ski and lots open to enjoy. Christmas markets dot the valleys and accommodation options are plentiful with some fantastic offers available. So the message is, don't despair, the skiing goes on in some locations, gets really very good from October onwards and for those looking for an autumn ski or snowboard holiday then there are some great value options with the chance of epic conditions. Summer will be over soon if it ever starts!
