Next winter you're looking for something new, but are worried about taking a risk on an unknown resort. Well, fear not: here are four fantastic undiscovered Austrian ski resorts which are definitely worth a visit.
Serfaus - extensive skiing at high altitude
Ask any German snowhead about Serfaus and their face will light up - as part of the enormous Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ski area, Serfaus is one of the most popular destinations for many European skiers. With 160km of perfectly prepared pistes up to an altitude of over 2800m, you can spend weeks here and never get bored. The resort often benefits from the same snowy weather systems as Ischgl and St Anton, making it one of the most snow-sure areas around. Serfaus village is quite family orientated during the February school holidays but is pretty lively outside of that, and also features a novel underground train to get you swiftly the length of the village!
Fieberbrunn - advanced terrain and great links
Until recently, Fieberbrunn was the domain of beginners finding their feet or pros searching for the fantastic powder that brings the Freeride World Tour here each year. However, with the new TirolS cable opening last winter, this small resort is now linked to the ski circus of Saalbach-Hinterglemm, creating a whopping 240km of interlinked pistes and putting Fieberbrunn firmly on the list of must-do resorts in Austria. The village itself is full of Alpine charm, offers numerous stylish hotels and is easily accessible from both Innsbruck and Salzburg airports.
Gerlos - traditional apres-ski at its best
If you've ever been to Mayrhofen you'll have passed signs for Gerlos, a smaller village located higher up the mountain and unknown to most British skiers. But a take a trip here and you'll see why the Dutch have been coming for years. The high altitude Zillertal Arena ski area with its 143km of pistes and amazing home run, is obviously one draw, however equally as many come for the crazy apres-ski scene that kicks off daily at 4pm. Expect ridiculously catchy songs, giant beers and plenty of dancing on the tables in ski boots - don't expect to make first lifts the next morning!
Innsbruck - the world's biggest ski resort
The self-proclaimed 'capital of the Alps' is known to most people as the gateway to Austria's many ski resorts, and is usually forgotten about as soon as the transfer bus leaves the airport. But for a short ski break, there is no better destination. With a transfer time of just ten minutes, a ski lift direct from the city centre (and several other resorts under 30 minutes away), a charming old town and the novelty of being in a ski resort that is also a working city (and indeed, home to some of the Jagged Horizons team), this would certainly be an Alpine event with a difference. And if you're already looking for your next ski fix, the nearby Stubai glacier opens in just under two months time - perfect for an early season getaway.
